South Sudan is a country in Africa. South Sudan is only four years old. After a long war, the war torn country gained its independence. South Sudan was fighting a war against Sudan because the government was Muslim, and wanted South Sudan to also practice Islam, and South Sudan wanted to practice their own religion.
Population:
The population of South Sudan is 11,563,000 people, but most of the population of South Sudan is people under the ages of 29. Most of the people are found along the Nile River, but most of the population lives in rural areas. There are many settlements along the water courses because they don't have the water supply during they need during the dry months.
3 Most Practiced Languages:The main languages used in South Sudan are English, Dinka, Nuer, Bari, and Zande. Dinka, Nuer, Bari, and Zandi are traditional tribal languages while English is a language adopted from Europe.
South Sudan & Water:During the November to May dry season, most sources of surface water such as ponds and lakes dry up. This forces millions of Southern Sudanese people to leave their homes and villages to search for water. Some families move all together, while others, usually women and children, are forced to trek miles to collect water from marshes, ditches, and hand-dug wells. This water is full of bacteria and parasites that cause diseases that can lead to suffering, pain, and even death.

General Geography & Environment
In South Sudan, land features include plains, swamps, jungles, and low mountains. The sudd, a swamp, and the White Nile lie in the East of South Sudan, and low mountains run along the south and west borders. The White Nile fosters many kinds of wildlife including antelope, crocodiles, and a dwindling population of elephants. Mountain ranges rise along South Sudan's borders with Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. South Sudan has a tropical climate, and receives an annual 30-40 inches of precipitation in the rainy season. The center and north of South Sudan has an annual high temperature of about 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit, and a low of around 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. The outlying areas of South Sudan are slightly cooler. South Sudan shares borders with Sudan to the North, Ethiopia to the East, Uganda, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the south, and the Central African Republic to the West. Major Ethnicities:The largest ethnic group in South Sudan is the Dinka, they account for around two-fifths of the population of South Sudan, closely followed by the Nuer, a rival tribe that makes up about one-fifth of the population. The Dinka and Nuer are semi nomadic cattle raisers that follow the seasonal precipitation patterns. Other ethnic groups include the Zande, the Bari, the Shilluk, and the Anwak.
Popular Music:
In the early 90s the Sudanese government destroyed recordings of important cultural artifacts to create space for propaganda. This included wiping unique tapes of southern Sudanese artist suck as Yousif Fataki. Female southern Sudanese singers combined styles from different regions, masking the meanings of their songs in different languages. Many modern songs are written about peace and liberty because of the recent war. Click here to listen.
